Natural balance analysis is a social network analysis technique that examines the balance of relationships between nodes to evaluate the structure of a network. Natural balance analysis is based on the premise that balanced relationships lead to more stable networks, whereas unbalanced relationships can lead to instability and conflict. The study focuses on triads, or groups of three nodes in a network. All three nodes in a balanced triad have either positive or negative relationships with one another.

For example, in a group of three friends, if Friend A likes Friend B and Friend B likes Friend C, then it is likely that Friend A also likes Friend C. This creates a balanced triad. On the other hand, an unbalanced triad is one in which there are both positive and negative relationships. For example, in a group of three friends, if Friend A likes Friend B but dislikes Friend C, then the triad is unbalanced.Natural balance analysis evaluates the overall balance of a network by examining the proportion of balanced and unbalanced triads. If a network has a high proportion of balanced triads, then it is considered to be more stable and less likely to experience conflict. Conversely, if a network has a high proportion of unbalanced triads, then it is considered to be less stable and more prone to conflict.Overall, natural balance analysis provides a useful tool for understanding the dynamics of social networks and predicting potential conflicts.
